   Graeme Murray

Graeme Murray was born in Edinburgh, Scotland in 1963 and studied at Edinburgh College of Art from 1981-86, gaining a 1st Class Honours BA Degree and Diploma of Post-Graduate Studies, (with Distinction).  Awards include The Royal Scottish Academy, John Kinross Traveling Scholarship to Florence, Italy, and Scottish Arts Council Award.  Murray was the youngest artist to be selected for the ‘Britain in Vienna' Festival, 1986, opened by HRH Prince Charles and Lady Diana.   

 

The artist has exhibited extensively in the UK and abroad, including, The Smith Biennial, Stirling, Warwick Arts Trust, Pimlico, London, The Contemporary Arts Society, Covent Garden, London, Vienna, Austria and the Academy of the Art Institute of San Francisco, USA.

 

In 1991, Murray was appointed as Artist In Residence, in the Shetland Islands, for the Scottish Arts Council and Shetland Arts Trust. During this time he developed themes and motifs reflecting folklore and literature. Ancestral themes were to form the basis of two further exhibitions in Nicosia and Limassol, Cyprus.   In 1994, Murray moved to a remote, studio location in the Troodos Mountains of Cyprus.  The artist was influenced by the spiritual ambience of the interior with high vaulted ceilings, engraved Templar crosses and carved Byzantine angels. 

 

The artist takes inspiration from Byzantine, Renaissance and Celtic sources, including mythology and folklore. His paintings are in public and private collections in the UK, Europe, Asia and North America.
